Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Leader
The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Adhering to Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:
- Free childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
