Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
