The Liverpool legend in frame for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Martin is sacked.
The former Rangers boss is under serious review for a shock return to Rangers following the official dismissal of manager Russell Martin.
Martin's unfortunate Ibrox tenure ends
The coach's unsuccessful Ibrox tenure finished with the gaffer leaving the the away venue via a back exit and a vehicle on standby after a share of the points which left Rangers 11 points from the summit of Scotland’s top flight after just seven fixtures.
Angry supporters had gathered around the Rangers team bus in the stadium location, making their feelings clear.
Rangers board reluctant to dismiss the manager
The Ibrox hierarchy had been hesitant to let go of the coach, who was only brought in in June, despite strong objections from the fanbase.
However, there was an realization that the coach's job had become unsustainable.
The club have managed only one win of their Premiership matches to date, which has been alongside dismal displays in European competition.
Collectively, the coach secured just five victories of 17 official games, with a lackluster, muddled footballing philosophy that won over few admirers.
“Although rebuilding phases take a while, outcomes have failed to reach the team's standards,” announced a Rangers statement on Sunday night.
“Number two Gill, and first-team coach Williamson, will also be departing. Martin and his backroom team have given their all throughout their tenure. We are grateful for their efforts and send best wishes for the next chapter.”
The former manager secured the championship with the team
Gerrard secured the championship with the Ibrox side in that campaign, their lone triumph since that year.
His work in Glasgow before then, combined with struggles at the Birmingham club, brings doubts about his managerial capabilities.
Yet he is held in high esteem by the very group of supporters Rangers are keen to get back on side.
The reappointment of the Liverpool icon, who last managed in the Saudi league, would be widely welcomed.
The coach will also be conscious of what few options he has to be a head coach in top-tier competitions.
The sacking will increase pressure on Thelwell
Martin’s exit will heighten focus on Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.
He had been very backing of the gaffer while disclosing a transfer outlay of twenty million pounds in the transfer window.
The ex-manager had signed a long-term deal.
