Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was poised to be among three contenders competing for Ireland's head of state, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

However, late Sunday he announced via a statement he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and the standards I set myself."

"After weighing these points, I've resolved to leave the presidential election contest immediately and go back to my family," he declared via a statement.

Additional details to come.
